Throwback Thursday: BBFW 2014

Cheers to my first Throwback Thursday blog post. I had a hard time deciding what to post first, have quite a few photos that I always planned to blog about before I ever started this blog. As I’ve been planning for the next Femme Fatale project, I decided that I had to start off with something pertaining to our local fashion designers and industry. So I’ll start off this blog series by going back to one of my favorite months of the year, October, and one of the events I look forward too, besides my Birthday, of course, is Bridgetown Barbados Fashion Week.

I started off the day by attending the morning seminar “fashion is Big Business” which hosted presentations by the Caribbean Market Centre, BIDC, Haitian born and New York based designer Charles Diejuste. The featured presenter was fashion designer Viktor Luna who was a contestant on Project Runway Season 9 and Project Runway All Stars.

Here I am with Viktor. Thanks to my friend Alfie for taking this shot for me.
It was great getting to hear the different experiences of Charles and Viktor. Although they are fashion designers, it was still great to hear their perspectives and lessons learnt from working in the industry. I definitely believe it’s important for fashion photographers to have a full understanding of the industry and the needs and thought processes of designers. I also found it interesting that Viktor’s creative director is a photographer; this sparked my attention since I’ve developed an increasing interest in doing creative direction professionally, not just for my own shoots. Overall the session was very inspiring and I really hope that our local fashion industry will develop to the level that our talented and hungry designers, photographers and others in the industry are striving for.

This year I didn’t work at the shows (see my coverage from BBFW 2013 here and featured in Islandista blog here). So this time I got to sit back, enjoy the happenings and be inspired by our local designers at the Hilton venue as I attended the Local and Regional designer night. I took my camera to take a few snapshots for reference purposes but, you know, being the photo addict I am, I ended up getting quite snap happy. Here are a few of my images from the sidelines….

One of the things I love about going to fashion shows is to catch up with friends and colleagues in the industry. Shout out to Shanni Thorpe and Shahaida Lynch, two models I met earlier that year who killed it on the runway. Congrats to my friend Alfie of Alpheus Designs who did a fantastic job as usual with the make-up looks. And shout out to Amanda Lynch-Foster of Islandista, Steffan of REI Academy and designers Orlando of William Pierre and Linda Belle Designs, and Melanie of Styled by Melanie Renee who kept me good company during the show. (Unfortunately I didn’t bring my flash and the venue was not the best lit, so I didn’t take many shots but here are a few snaps.)
